Your First HSQF Audit: What to Expect and How to Prepare

HSFQ

Preparing for your first Human Services Quality Framework (HSQF) audit can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

At IHCA, we support human services providers like you every step of the way. Whether you’re applying for self-assessment or a full Certification Audit, this guide outlines exactly what to expect and how to prepare with confidence.

HSQF Self-Assessment or Certification: Which one do you need?

  • Self- Assessment: For organisations delivering low risk, non-clinical services (e.g. community support, youth programs)
  • Certification Audit: Required for providers with more complex service delivery, multiple sites, or higher risk client groups

The HSQF Audit Process

  1. Audit Planning: You’ll complete a self-assessment and supply documentation. Our team will plan site visits, interviews, and sampling based on your organisational risk and service type.
  2. Site Audit: IHCA’s auditors will visit your site(s), interview staff and service users (where appropriate), and review your documentation against each of the six HSQF standards.
  3. Audit Report & Findings: You’ll receive a report highlighting strengths and areas for improvement. Non-conformities found must be addressed within a specified timeframe.

How to Prepare Effectively

  • Complete a readiness assessment
  • Train frontline staff and managers on key responsibilities
  • Have up-to-date policies and evidence easily accessible
  • Set internal deadlines for each step in the audit preparation timeline
