The terms “registration” and “certification” are often used interchangeably in the disability sector, but they mean different things, and knowing the difference matters.
What is NDIS Registration?
NDIS registration is the process of applying to the NDIS Commission to become a registered provider. You must:
- Apply through the Commission portal
- Undergo an audit (verification or certification)
- Demonstrate that you meet practice standards
Registration is the gateway. It means you’re eligible to provide supports under the NDIS.
The certification and verification recommendations of an approved Quality Auditor are input to the NDIS Commission’s registration decision making process.
What is NDIS Certification?
Certification is the result of an external audit by an approved quality auditor. It demonstrates that your organisation meets the NDIS Practice Standards.
For high-risk services, certification is mandatory. Your certification is valid for three years, but ongoing compliance monitoring continues.
Why it Matters
Confusing these terms can lead to gaps in compliance or unnecessary spending.
When choosing support for your compliance journey, ensure you’re working with an approved NDIS auditor (like IHCA) who can guide you through all stages.
