Quality Improvement Council Standards and Accreditation Program
Overview
QIC is a national non-profit organisation that aims to promote and assist health and community services through a program of continuous quality improvement. It is responsible for the coordination of the QIC Standards and other quality improvement services.
The QIC Standards and Accreditation Program provides:
- Guidelines for effective quality management and service delivery
- Criteria for organisational and service development
- A process to improve planning and evaluation
- Consumer and community involvement
- A system for accreditation
In response to changing needs of services, the QIC Standards provide a comprehensive quality management accreditation tool without imposing unnecessarily complex criteria.
The 5 th Edition of the Standards introduces a systems framework approach using a journal to record processes and procedures. Service specific modules are used in conjunction with the Core Module which include:
- Community and Primary Health Care Services Module (2004)
- Integrated Health Services Module (2004)
- Home Based Care Services Module (2004)
- Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Services Module (2004)
- Maternal and Infant Care Services Module (1999)
- Mental Health Services Module (2005)
The QIC Review Cycle
- Is a cycle of continuous quality improvement
- Uses an organisational development model of quality management
- Has a strong consumer focus
- Encourages adoption of a primary health care philosophy
- Enhances the capacity of individuals and communities to take control of their own health care
